Last week saw the global launch of Vogue’s Fashion Night Out, both a celebration of fashion, and yet another attempt to revive flagging consumer confidence in the retail industry. Comprising of over a dozen events worldwide, we were curious to see what events were planned in our very own London town. On a last minute tip, we decided to leave well alone the pretend paparazzi at Debenhams, a futile flashmob at Lambretta, and lo, even a Yo Sushi sponsored Uniqlo ‘party’. Instead, coolography opted rather atypically to visit global high street basics peddlers GAP, for their new ‘1969′ concept store opening and 40th anniversary party… continue reading »

termite pavilion @ pestival 2009

Pestival 2009, the portmanteau’d Pest Festival celebrating the role of insects in art, was headlined by an interesting termite mound structure taking residence next to the South Bank’s Royal Festival Hall. A six metre squared structure inspired by Namibian termite mounds, first scanned in 3D by Dr. Rupert Soar and the TERMES project. Taking a central section of a termite mound and scaling it up to human size, the sculpture allows people to walk through and explore the structure, accompanied by eerie, insect produced ambient sounds. coolography managed to see both its construction and deconstruction – an impressive feat – layering dozens of cross laminated sections of Austrian spruce timber upon eachother to create the cavernous, rippling interior… continue reading »

Brand Jordan have put up a cool interactive feature timeline of their most iconic range of trainers, the air Jordan. Starting from the very first, nike branded incarnation, the interactive slide show works in a popup book style right up to present day, dealing with the history, design inspirations, and the associated sporting achievements that have made the humble shoe so famous. Though most of the notable factoids involve and surround the legend Michael Jordan himself, there are also cool tidbits that delve into the thinking behind the shoe, and throwbacks into the advertising of the brand. The coolest aspect for us, however, is the subtle monotone renderings of the jordan shoes themselves; we would kill to have a few of the classic silhouttes in such pristine colourways… continue reading »

clae fall/winter 09

claefall09_1There was a point where coolography, in the folly of their youth, vowed to always rock their footwear hard, no matter the style, colour, fit – we were gonna represent with crazy colourways, mad materials, and of course, pairs obtained through limited lines. Fast forward a few years, and, well, coolography’s getting old. Neon nylon hi-tops, patent watermelon, shy pink ostrich skin… all have slowly dropped out of the regular rotation, in favour of more subtle, classic styles. Although not quite shedding the swoosh for the wingtips just yet, coolography is finding a compromise in a multitude of footwear bridging the gap between trainers and shoes. Clae is a case in point… continue reading »

let yourself feel by esteban diácono

Most visualisation tools for music players are at best a momentary distraction and at worst a complete waste of time. When Esteban Diácono is involved, however, the visualisations can be more interesting than the music itself. Using a combination of “Adobe After Effects, Particular v2, soundkeys and a little starglow,” Esteban has brought to life the music of Olafur Arnalds’ ‘Ljósið’ – the enthralling multicoloured swoops and swirls impressed enough to become the official music video.
