claefall09_1There was a point where coolography, in the folly of their youth, vowed to always rock their footwear hard, no matter the style, colour, fit – we were gonna represent with crazy colourways, mad materials, and of course, pairs obtained through limited lines. Fast forward a few years, and, well, coolography’s getting old. Neon nylon hi-tops, patent watermelon, shy pink ostrich skin… all have slowly dropped out of the regular rotation, in favour of more subtle, classic styles. Although not quite shedding the swoosh for the wingtips just yet, coolography is finding a compromise in a multitude of footwear bridging the gap between trainers and shoes. As the UK’s most eminent and respected institution in all things sneaker related, Crooked Tongues are perennially on coolography’s radar, whether for their jaw dropping trainer collaborations, the ’show love and drop knowledge’ ethos of their forums, or for, as you shall soon see, their legendary annual BBQs . Following 2007’s brief foreign exchange in Bangkok, Thailand, and a sadly cancelled edition in Munich last year, the Crooked Tongues BBQ was coming back in style for their home base in London town. Whilst our attendance was guaranteed come rain or shine, promises of free BBQ, alcohol, music, and a crowd consisting of the most devoted sneakerheads meant our RSVP made its way to crooked towers with breakneck speed. Environmentally friendly footwear probably isn’t high on most people’s list of priorities. Conjuring thoughts of either barefoot living or donning monstrosities such as these, the two extremes would leave most people happy in their existing comfort zone. But in these oft socially irresponsible, environmentally unaware times it’s good to see a brand focus not only on ‘green’ production practices but also embrace ethical concerns aswell. Which is why we noticed Keep – footwear produced ethically in Brazil with 100% cotton canvas uppers and natural gum rubber soles.
