We love London, and we love photography. Similar sentiments are shared by many, and often the love for both can be brought beautifully together – in particular, by friend of coolography, Stuart Gleave. Playful, colourful, imaginative – compositions that make us sit back and fall deeper in love with this city of ours. Having followed his work for some time, we felt a coolography feature was long overdue. Continue reading for a compilation of his favourite London shots as well as a short Q&A…

prague 360

Posted on: 20 December 2009

We love a good panorama. And they don’t get much better than this. Currently, the world’s largest spherical panorama photo, 360cities have captured spectacular views of  the Prague skyline. Shot from the top of the Prague TV Tower, the 3d scene simultaneously achieves a high vantage point and also a convenient omission of the city’s controversial eyesore. Shot with a canon 5d mark 2, hundreds of photos were stitched together to produce a final 18 gigapixel image – enough to make any other camera bleed with inadequacy, and with a zoom level that even makes CSI believable. Screenshots of course do it no justice, just have a look for yourselves.

hubble ultra deep field in 3d

Posted on: 13 August 2009

The Hubble Ultra Deep Field is an image resulted from pointing the Hubble space telescope at a previously assumed empty region of space. Composited from data accumulated over a period of 6 months, the picture forms the deepest image of the universe ever to have been taken. Looking back over 13 billion years, and containing an estimated 10,000 galaxies, the image is widely purported to be one of the most important to ever be produced by humankind. Consider that the relative size of the image is equivalent to one thirteen-millionth of the total area of the sky, and that alone contains over 10,000 galaxies, each of which contains hundreds of millions of stars much like our sun.

The above video uses red shift data to calculate relative distances between each of those galaxies, and uses this to animate a spectacular 3d flythrough. An unfathomably humbling experience.

sony party shot

Sony’s digital compact cameras are without a doubt some of the most stylish, and though we loathe to use the word, sexiest, around. The T series, in particular, is coolography’s favoured range, having gone through several lifetimes worth of use from the T1, the T9 and coolography’s current model du jour, the T700. When not used to help adorn the odd coolography article, the camera is an indispensable tool for social occasions, frequently documenting all minor and major events. For those who often find themselves as photographer, yet lack appearances of their own in photo albums, however, Sony’s new Party Shot may have a solution… continue reading »

sartorialist

With a great disparity between fashion he saw in the real world, and those of everyday people in the street, Scott Schuman one day decided to document those he simply thought were, as coolography would say, a good look. Fast forward a few years and the former fashion marketer turned self taught photographer found himself running one of the world’s most famous fashion blogs. As well as “turning photo blogging into an art form”, Schuman was also named recently as one of Time magazine’s top 100 design influencers.

Now, after over four years and countless photographs, Schuman has compiled an anthology of his most favoured shots from around the world; the wide range of sartorial subjects spans from London to Rio, Paris to Milan, and of course, New York.

Available in paperback and a luxurious, limited edition hardback edition, The Sartorialist is a must for any style junkie’s coffee table.
